Cross Stitch Pillows

The crocheting didn't go well with the designs (see post Crocheted Aussie Pillows). Even though I was careful to not drop or add any stitches on each row, the piece was coming out of shape and the design seemed to be off. I ripped it out 3 times and started over but still was not happy with the result. Sometimes those things just happen. I didn't want to feel as though I had wasted my time with the designs so here is what I decided to do.
I went to my sewing room and found some scraps of checked material. I was fortunate to find three colors (one for each dog design) that will look perfect in the room where I want to use the pillows.
I am using the graphs below as my guide for the stitches, and the photographs of the dogs for the colors. Since I am now cross stitching the pillows, it is easier to use more colors. (When I originally wanted to crochet the designs, I was trying to limit the number of color changes I was going to have to make.)
The project is turning out great and I will probably finish the pillows in less time than I would have with the crocheting. I'm a little disappointed that they won't be crocheted, but I have some crocheted pillows and an afghan that turned out well of the owls I was working on earlier. So, maybe this is just as well.

Pictured above are the completed cross stitch pieces of the 1st and 3ed dogs shown below....they haven't been made into a pillow yet, I just laid them against a pillow I already had to take the picture. I am very pleased with how these two turned out. Now on to the last dog......

Crocheted Aussie Pillows

I've grown a little tired of sewing, painting, and crocheting owls so now I'm working on another bedroom.....the one themed "Australian Shepherds"! Since, as I've mentioned before on this blog, the Australian Shepherd is my favorite breed and I have been collecting Aussie items for the past 25+ years. I just need a few new items to finish off the room.

I've also recently started back my love of crocheting. So for this project I decided I wanted to crochet some throw pillows for the bed that were of my own dogs. However, I wanted them to look "fun" or possibly "funky", so I had to go through a few steps to come up with the actual "plan".

Here is what I did -

(1) found a photograph of each of my now living dogs (there are 3) and uploaded them to my computer and opened them in fotoflexer.com.

(2)next I turned the photo of the 1st dog into a black and white sketch and did some editing to define some areas that were lost. The other two dogs I used the photographs from above for the following step.

(3) I used the fotoflex.com software to turn my sketch into "pop art". It gave me 4 different color blocks of the dog's photographs (sort of an Andy Warhol look) see below.

(4) I wanted to use only one of the color blocks for each of the dogs and I wanted to use a different color for each dog. So I cropped and then enlarged as shown below.

(5)Next I had to turn each of the photos into a graph. I used Photoshop to do this.
I will add the steps I used in Photoshop later so you can try this out if you wish.

(6) After you've made your graph you have to write down the color changes carefully so you can follow the pattern. There are other ways to achieve a picture crochet but the way I am doing mine is to work the design as though I am looking directly at the photo/graph, the way I would read (right to left). This means for example on the first picture above, I would be working my first row in a bright green all the way across for several rows. After I finish each row, I ch 1 and turn my work so the next row has to be worked the opposite of the last. You work left to right when you crochet but we normally read left to right so if your directions are written out as you read, you will have to alter your instructions accordingly. Is that confusing? I'll try to see if I can find some better instructions of how to crochet using a graph and post them later.

Pictured above is the1st picture I took of the crocheted pillow. I kept working on this project until I was completely dissatisfied with the result. I decided to go back to the drawing board and do something else with the designs/graphs I created of my dogs. See post "Cross Stitched Aussie Pillows".

I've had an obsession lately with making things to "theme" the bedrooms in my house. I think it's my friend Molly's fault! While visiting her home recently, she took me to see her guest bedroom that was filled with all types of sheep and lambs! Molly LOVES sheep, almost as much as she loves her sheep herding dogs, which is how we became friends. We have the same breed, the Australian Shepherd. Molly's room had stuffed sheep, sheep pillows, sheep pictures, sheep quilts and throws, sheep figurines and anything that she could find with a sheep on it! The room was precious!

I actually have 2 or 3 bedrooms that I want to "theme". The first one is going to be with owls - I just love owls! Many years ago, my late husband and I rescued a baby owl that had fallen out of it's nest which was in our very wooded backyard. We took him to the bird sanctuary in our town and asked if he was ever to be released back into the wild, that he be returned to our yard where he could live with the other owls there. The next day we learned that he had cataracts (supposedly very common problem) and would never have been able to see well enough to catch his own food supply. We were told he would have to live his life at the Sanctuary where he would be in a safe habitat and fed by the staff.

Approximately 10 years later, while at an arts festival in the country, about 25 miles from my old neighborhood, I ran into a woman with an owl on her shoulder. She was walking around the festival informing the people about the bird sanctuary and what they did for the birds and animals that lived there. I walked up to her and told her about the owl we had rescued years back. She asked me where we had lived and I told her. She then said, "this is Chancey, YOUR owl!" I was so surprised and happy to see him again. He was now all grown up. The last time I had seen him he didn't even have feathers yet, he was all down and fluff! My husband and I had named him in the car on the trip to the sanctuary. We thought Chance would be a good name for him since he was going to have another chance at life. The woman said she had kept his name but added the "y" to it. She said she ended up loving him so much that he didn't really live at the sanctuary, that he came home with her every day! I'm so glad Chance/Chancey met up with her!

The picture above left, is Chancey resting on the lady's arm. I took this picture the day I saw them at the festival.

So, you're probably wondering what I'm planning to do with the room, how I'm going to decorate it with owls. Well, I'm sewing pillows with owls , painting pictures of owls and crocheting stuffed owls and crocheting an afghan/throw with owls. It will still be a while before it's finished but I will update this post throughout the process. For now, I have more plans than I have time but I'm having fun....and that's what counts, right?

Tshirt Design for 2012 FL Pan-Handlers upcoming dog show

I created this design for the FL Pan-Handlers Australian Shepherd Club for their upcoming dog show. It will look like this image on the t-shirt.

This is the first time our club has been able to use more than black and white on our shirts and we are very excited.

The club consists of dog fanciers of the Australian Shepherd breed but we do have several members with other breeds. We are a fun group of people who get together to host 3 shows a year, several "fun days" for club members and 1 "fun day" a year to invite new members to visit with us and our dogs, and at least 1 learning clinic each year.

The shows we host are ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) sanctioned and consist of Conformation (ASCA registered dogs only), Obedience, Rally and Agility which are open to all registered breeds.

Day 10 - Art Journal Challenge

Draw snowflakes. Big, little, medium - all sizes and shapes. Color just the background leaving the snowflakes white.

These are Gwyneth's snowflakes. She called to tell me she hadn't done them right, that she didn't follow the instructions...to which I said that's what's so much fun about ART! There are NO rules exactly! You have guides or inspiration to get you going but what comes out in the end is YOUR creation and that's what makes it so wonderful!

And for me, this wasn't as easy at it should have been either...well, first of all I had no colored markers - they were all dried up! That meant I had to use my gel pens and that was very time consuming considering this is supposed to be a "quick" drawing done every day. Well, I'm not very happy with it, but it's done and now I'm on to bigger and better things. Mainly, a purse I'm crocheting and the book I'm writing. Also have a nice fresh brew of hot coffee waiting to be poured in to my mug and some Aussies at my feet to give some attention!
Snowflakes were very appropriate today being it has been in the 20's here in Northwest Florida. Yes you read that right!

Baby it's cold outside!

Wow, what happened to the weather around here? Over Christmas we were in either short sleeves or lightweight jackets, now it's in the 20's! I hope all the kiddos out here in the country are bundled up good this morning as they wait to catch the bus back to school. Brrrrr....
I realize many who will read this live in a much colder climate, so for them 20 degrees is nothing, but here in Northwest Florida it's not a normal thing to awaken to your pastures (in my case), or yard filled with frost and looking as though it snowed during the night! It's really an amazing site and I'm surprised how my dogs and horses don't seem to even notice that the ground is frozen and cracking under their feet. In fact, the dogs find it very amusing and stay out much longer than they do when the heat of summer is upon us! Just last night at 10:45 I was out all bundled up with flashlight and leash in tote as I called one of my dogs to come inside. He thought it was the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors! That's him pictured in the upper right corner, but the picture was taken this summer when the grass was still green.

I'm in the middle of writing a book. It's art related, no doubt! I will be researching over the next few weeks or months to find a publisher. I've not written a book before so I'm a bit excited and nervous at the same time. Yesterday it consumed me! Today I'm going to work on some other projects, play with dogs and try to stay warm!

Oh, my! This is addictive - it reminds me of all the fun I had back in school - yes, when I was NEVER listening to the teacher! I wish someone would have noticed back then that I just needed to draw! Maybe I would have been a great "something" in the art world. At least I have my art now! It's such a part of me!

Gwyneth did a great job again! She follows the instructions so well! I'm going to have to get busy thinking of more and more ideas to challenge her to take us through an entire year!

These are my sea shells! Probably different than anyone else would draw them, but I like them and I'm going to leave them alone and NOT put the colored markers to them!
I wonder if Gwyneth is ahead of me! Guess I'll have to give her a call in a little while to see :)

I love how Gwyneth did her sea shells! It makes me feel as though I'm walking on the beach and I look down and see these 3 shells and they say "take me home with you". And look at that texture in the sand!!!! Good job!

Draw 3 objects that are round and then decorate or paint/color them however you wish.

As I sat at the counter thinking what 3 objects I would draw, I looked over at our beautiful Christmas tree. I think it's the prettiest one that Asa (my husband) and I have had yet - it's our 8th one!
Turquoise and purple are my favorite colors and since I didn't have a purple "fineliner" I used turquoise. Now you know what my true favorite color is, don't you! Just ask Gwyneth if you still haven't figured it out because she knows! Hers, by the way, IS turquoise!
The door knob I chose because I glanced over to see if I had locked the door after I came in with the dogs (and yes, I had).
The button, well, just because - I suppose! Buttons have been in the back of my mind recently because just before Christmas my daughter fell and injured her leg. She's going to be having knee surgery soon. Anyway, she asked me to stop to pick up some things for her the day before Christmas so she could finish some projects. I got everything she asked, EXCEPT the buttons! I totally forgot! Now they're all I can think about!

I love the way Gwyneth put some design on her apple and flower! And her 3 choices of round objects are fantastic!

*update - What a smart girl Gwyneth is! She came home from her trip and drew her fruit! Wow! Nana still hasn't drawn hers...gotta get to the store to buy some fruit first!
and I might add, I just LOVE the way she did her fruit and basket! She continues to impress and inspire me! If you could just watch her draw and paint you'd see what I mean. She just jumps right in to any task as though it's a "piece of cake". Unlike most adults who sit there and ponder over every mark they are about to make on that blank piece of paper.

Even though I haven't draw today's challenge, I have to journal about it because it's so precious -
Yesterday, Gwyneth called me and asked if she could skip over this day's entry. She explained they were in their SUV on their way to Orlando. She said, "Nana, I'm in the car and I don't have any fruit right now, or a basket to put any in, so I can't really draw this one right now!" Of course I told her to just move on to the next one and come back to this one later. In fact, I don't have any fruit at the moment myself, but I didn't tell her that! Then she said, "Good, because I already did the next one where you draw the 3 round objects." and then she asked if I'd drawn my table and chairs yet (day 4). Gotta keep her Nana in check! And, I hadn't so after we'd ended our conversation, I pulled out my pens and Nana got busy!

Trace your hand and draw designs on it. Fill the background with a different design.

First of all, I liked my design much better before I decided to "play around" with it several days after I had completed my entry. AND, I won't be using Sharpie pens for my coloring again as they bled through the paper. I should have known that! Anyway....

I wanted to see what it would look like using all warm colors for the hand and all cool colors for the background. I achieved the effect I wanted but still I liked the image better in just black and white. I will be doing most of the entries without color. I believe this is inspiring me to pull out my pen and ink again and do some of my serious drawings using that medium. It's been many years since I've used them. I primarily use pencil, watercolor or acrylic.

This was my attempt to quickly draw something showing texture. I liked it until I came back several days later and added color to it. Somehow now it looks more like an exercise on "movement" than texture! - Oh, well, that's ART! and guess that's just another lesson for later on. After all, lines also create movement!

Draw your favorite toy.

Obviously, I am trying to keep this at the age level of an eight year old, so I drew my favorite toy from that age.
If I were to have drawn a favorite toy from this age I wouldn't have been able to choose!

- luckily, my granddaughter isn't caught up in all the technological toys yet and she drew a picture of the "American Doll" that she received on Christmas!

My favorite toy at her age, if you haven't already guessed, was Tinker Toys! I asked Gwyneth when I had finished if she knew what I had drawn. She didn't! I expected that answer. I told her as a child I had loved playing with Tinker Toys, so much so, that my parents were able to bribe me to stop sucking my thumb for a brand new JUMBO can of them! Gwyneth and I laughed about the story, especially since I was 9 years old and in the 3rd grade at the time! For those of you from my hometown, which is Pensacola FL, you should remember the ole VAN METRES store on 9th Avenue! Well, I can still remember going there with my mama to pick out my new Tinker Toys that glorious day!

Nana and Gwyneth's daily Art Journal Challenge of 2012

Up until now, I have used this blog mainly as a storage device for my art portfolio. A place where past, present or future customers could view my work. But beginning with this New Year, I am going to TRY to write or post pictures more often as I plan to record my journal here in "cyberspace". Hopefully it will inspire someone else to make the same challenge my granddaughter and I have made together! So here's the plan.....
For Christmas this year (2011) I gave my 8 year old granddaughter, Gwyneth, an art journal and kept an identical one for myself. Inside the journal, consisting of 80 pages, I wrote an inspiration at the bottom of each page to get her in the habit of drawing every day. Then I challenged her to use this journal daily and told her I would be doing exactly the same thing. I suggested we could send each other a picture of our drawing every day using either our cellphone or an email (don't you just love this day and time with all the technology) !
Gwyneth LOVES art and reminds me so much of myself at her age - only she has far more direction, energy, and potential than I ever had! I look forward to seeing all the wonderful creativeness she will produce now and in the coming years!
So let us begin........................

This is an acrylic painting I did to hang over our mantle this Christmas. The dog is an Australian Shepherd, our beloved breed for the past 25 years! The bare trees which you can see very faintly in the green portion of the background are symbolic of the 285 pecan trees we have in our orchard.

This year since funds were scarce due to my hubby being out of work for 4 months following open heart surgery, I decided to make as many gifts as possible. I made hats (see photo below) for the younger grandchildren and did a few paintings for the older ones and even did some crocheting this year. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed crocheting! It's a great "bad weather" activity. I'd much rather be outside working in my garden and/or flower beds or playing with the dogs or horses but chilly/cold or rainy days are not my idea of a fun time outdoors. So this winter, I've spent a lot of time in front of the fireplace with a cup of hot tea, my crochet hook and yarn, watching old movies and throwing the tennis ball a million times into the air in the living room to my youngest Australian Shepherd, Woodie - who would also much rather be outside!

The grandkids were very interested in the Nativity this year! Which no doubt made this Nana very happy. Gwyneth was very surprised to learn that I had painted this Nativity when I was 8 years old - her age now! Hudson thought it might be nice to let one of the characters from "Toy Story" visit the baby Jesus alongside of the wisemen and the shepherds. Paige isn't so sure about that!

Pictured to the right are the hats I made the grandkids. The girls and their dolls got crocheted floppy hats with pretty crocheted flowers and the younger boys got patchwork bucket hats made from their late grandfather's shirts. For fun I crocheted my son-in-law a beanie hat complete with beard since he always complains he cannot grow a full beard. He said he would now be wearing it to all the family gatherings during hunting season when one of my other sons-in-law sports his beard! :) Eldest grandson, Jacob, did like his crochet beanie hat inspite of the scary look he gave me for the camera!

Our granddaughter, Zoe lives with her family in South Florida and she dearly loves the manatee. She asked me while visiting this past summer if I would paint her a manatee for Christmas.....so I did. This is the painting. It is a 16X20 acrylic. Merry Christmas Zoe!

This watercolor painting was done for one of my dear friends. It is her husband and daughter while at the Father-Daughter dance performance this year. She liked it so much that she had prints made for her mother and mother-in-law.

This is a watercolor painting that I had done earlier of my husband's 1961 Corvette reflected in a dark black truck that was parked alongside of us one year at the Hot Rod Power Tour in Mobile AL. I decided to give it to my grandson, Jacob, who is now 12 years old to go on his bedroom wall. My daughter and her family moved into the new home they built and this was their first Christmas there. Jacob's room has all the colors that are in this painting and I also thought he could think of me and Asa whenever he glances over at it.

And....I made a purse for my daughter, Christine. I forgot to get a picture of it before I gave it to her so maybe she'll take one for me and I can post it later.

Estill County Engineers T-shirt/apparel design

This is my first commissioned piece of work since finishing my Adobe Illustrator class. It was fun to do and I hope the customer will ask me for some more work!

Their High School sports teams are called the Engineers. They wanted a design that could be used for all the various sports on tshirts and other apparel. I left a blank rectangle (horizontal) where they could print the name of the particular sport.

"Old-Rides" and Nostalgia Pensacola

The "LOST" painting of Bernie

This is a commissioned painting I finished recently. It was to be the buyer's gift to her husband for Father's Day! I mailed the painting in plenty of time for it's arrival before Father's Day....but the US Postal Service had other plans! I filed the insurance claim on the 11th of July after waiting 26 days for the painting to arrive to my customer and repainted the piece to be mailed out later that week. On July 12th I received a call from the buyer stating the painting just arrived unharmed! So, after 27 days of being LOST in the mail, it finally made it and now I have only to cancel the insurance claim. I'm thinking from now on I will be using UPS or FedX! Sorry it took so long to arrive folks, but I hope you enjoy your painting of Bernie!

This is an 18X24 acrylic I painted recently of my late dog, Koty. He was a red merle Australian Shepherd and my treasured companion for 12 years. It took me well over a year after his death to be able to paint him without breaking down. I feel very confident I have captured the way I want him to be remembered. This painting now hangs where he is the first thing I see each morning when I awaken and the last thing I see before I fall asleep each night - well that is along with my other 3 living Aussies, who are next to me at all times. :)

These are original watercolors done of children's names. I obtained a copyright on the letters for this alphabet back in 1983. The letters are phonetic and are all lower case. I created this alphabet for my daughter, Christine, when she was 3 years old as I was teaching her the sounds that each letter made.

I began painting childrens names using my "alphabec's" for customers by word of mouth and by the end of 5 years I probably had painted several hundred names. I stopped painting my "alphabec's" for several years - only painting them occasionally as gifts for friends or relatives.

It has now been almost 30 years since I created this alphabet and it is still in demand.

Let me paint one for your special someone. I'm sure they will enjoy it for years to come.

This was so much fun to paint! I first put torn pieces of paper doilies on my watercolor paper by applying Gesso over them. After it all dried I drew the quilt design onto the watercolor paper. Then I began my painting. If you look very closely you can see the design of the doilies coming through the paint.
